The Mammut Pulse was released in 2006 and discontinued in 2017.
The Mammut Pulse can be updated through special a wireless link. The ability to update your beacon is important, because it allows you to get enhancements and new features without purchasing a new avalanche transceiver. ( Learn how to update other transceivers.)
Beginning with version 3.0, the version number on a Pulse transceiver is displayed on the screen when you turn on the power. To check the version on earlier versions, press either "side" button shortly after turning on the unit and then use the left button to scroll through the settings to Maintenance.
It costs $30us to update the Pulse. The update can be done at about a dozen retail locations in the US and Canada as well as at the Mammut service centers in Vermont and British Columbia. - Expanded first signal display. A new algorithm allows for increased range (presumably 2-5 meters) during the signal search in certain situations.
- Optimized direction display. Changes to the internal compass reduce "jumpiness" in the directional and distance indicators and guide the searcher along a more direct path.
- Intelligent Search. The Pulse's new " Intelligent Search" mode (one of three optional settings for the final search phase when using the advanced profile) guides you through the fine search process.

- Directional Tones. The Pulse's (and Element's) audio tones now change based on the direction indicator. Learn more about this feature.
- Rescue-Send. This feature is targeted at professional users: If you are in Search mode and you switch directly to Send, the Pulse will ask you if you prefer "Rescue-Send." In this mode, the Pulse is neither sending or receiving, but it will revert to transmit if it doesn't sense motion after seven minutes. This basically mutes the beep-beep that would normally occur while searching without transmitting a signal.
- Landing Strip or Cross Fire. This changes the display during the Pulse's fine search between a "landing strip" (forward and backward only) and a "cross fire." Learn about the "landing strip" approach here.
- Lithium Batteries. Starting with version 3.2, the Pulse can use either alkaline or lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are "considerably lighter" and will increase the battery life by 30% to 50%. They also eliminate the possibility of corrosion. You must choose the appropriate "alkaline" or "lithium" option in the Pulse's settings before changing the type of battery.

- Basic profile is the "easiest digital search for casual users"
- Advanced profile offers "analog and digital search modes and customized settings"
- Version 3.0 is supposed to provide an increased reception range.

- Dynamic pinpointing display
The search arrow now grows/shrinks depending on how close you are to the victim which provides another indication of the distance to the victim (in addition to the changing tone and distance display).
- Numbering of marked buried subjects
- Acoustic signal from signal search through coarse search
- Protection against accidental switching from Search to Send
- There has been a significant reduction in the number of "Please stand still" and "Hold device horizontal" messages.
- Variable size distance numbers. I.e., the size of the integer and decimal portions of the distance numbers make it easier to differential between numbers such as 23 meters and 2.3 meters.
- Acoustic feedback when Send mode is activated
